How challenging is the trek?

The EverTrek Training Weekends in the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia have become a bit of a rite of passage for EverTrekkers getting ready for big adventures. These weekends are all about getting your legs moving, testing your gear, building your mountain skills and getting your mind and body prepared for high altitude and trekking expeditions like Everest Base Camp, Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu, or even 6,000m+ peaks.

They’re designed to be challenging but accessible, whatever stage you’re at in your trek prep. You’ll spend full days hiking in rugged UK mountain terrain, carrying your daypack, climbing summits, and learning essential skills that’ll help you smash your upcoming trips.

It’s about preparation, not perfection and with the guidance of the EverTrek team (and a few Yetis), you’ll come away fitter, smarter, and fully fired up for your main event.

Pre-Weekend Fitness Prep

To get the most out of the weekend, you should be able to:

  • Walk for 5 to 7 hours a day with a 6 to 8kg daypack

  • Tackle moderate to steep ascents and descents, often on rocky, uneven trails

  • Enjoy a full day on your feet, hiking at a steady pace with breaks

You don't need to be a mountain marathon runner - just have a base level of fitness and a willingness to get stuck in. If you’re prepping for a high altitude or trekking expedition, think of this weekend as your real-world fitness checkpoint.

What To Expect On The Trek

Mountain Challenges

Our training routes serve up challenging terrain, with steep climbs, rocky ridges, muddy trails (especially after Welsh rain), and long descents. The terrain isn’t technical, but it’s tough enough to give you a proper workout and mirror some of the physical effort needed for trekking at altitude.

Summits vary, but you’ll usually bag a few local peaks, learning pacing, hydration, and mountain safety techniques along the way.

Duration

The weekends run from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, and typically include:

  • A full day of trekking on Saturday (aprox 5–7 hours)

  • A shorter hike or activity session on Sunday morning (2–4 hours)

  • Breakout workshops focusing on gear, altitude training, packing tips, and trek-specific advice

Friday night is arrival, briefing, and meeting the team – nice and relaxed, with time to settle in and meet your fellow trekkers.

Terrain

You’ll be walking on:

  • Grassy trails, rocky paths, muddy sections, and occasional steep pitches

  • Summit routes with exposed sections and changing weather

  • Classic UK mountain conditions - unpredictable, beautiful, and challenging

You’ll carry your own daypack (around 30L) with essentials for the day (waterproofs, snacks, water, extra layers, etc.), much like you would on a full trek.

Weather

Expect anything and everything:

  • Rain, wind, sun, and cloud often all make an appearance

  • Conditions can change quickly, so layering and good waterproofs are essential

  • Cool mornings and evenings, even in summer

It’s the perfect environment to test your kit and make sure you’re dialled in before you hit the bigger mountains overseas.

The EverTrek Training Weekends are about more than just hiking - they’re about building confidence, connection, and knowledge. You'll meet your guides, chat with Andy and Dave, swap stories with fellow trekkers, test your gear, and get the kind of insider advice that makes a real difference on the trail.

If you’re heading out on a high altitude or trekking expedition, these weekends are hands-down one of the best ways to prepare - physically, mentally, and socially. Plus, you’ll have an unforgettable few days in the mountains while you're at it.

Food & Accommodation

Image

The Brecon Training Weekend is all about getting you trek-ready but just as important is making sure you’re fuelled up and well-rested. Over the course of the weekend, you’ll stay in shared accommodation in the Brecon Beacons area and enjoy breakfast each morning to set you up for the day ahead.

Not all meals are included for this weekend, but don’t worry, the EverTrek team makes it super easy and sociable by arranging group dinners and pizza nights. It’s all part of the fun and a brilliant way to meet your fellow EverTrekkers and Yetis.

Food

Keeping energy levels up is key for busy days on the trails, and while lunches and evening meals aren’t included in your trip cost, we’ve got everything organised to make meals stress-free.

Breakfast

ImageImage

Breakfast is included on Saturday and Sunday mornings at your accommodation to fuel you for a full day hiking in the Brecon Beacons.

Lunch

Lunch isn’t included, so you’ll need to bring your own packed lunch for the Saturday and Sunday activities. There are plenty of local shops and supermarkets a short drive away where you can pick up supplies on your way to the accommodation, or you can organise your packed lunch in advance before you travel.

Think sandwiches, fruit, nuts, energy bars - food that’s easy to carry and fuels you through a day on the hills.

Dinner
  • Friday Night: We arrange a big group pizza order from The Proper Pizza Company in Brecon. If you'd like to join in, we’ll organise everything in advance and one of the EverTrek team will be in touch to take your order and payment.
  • Saturday Night: We head out to a fantastic Nepalese restaurant for a delicious group dinner. It's a great way to sample some of the flavours of Nepal before your big adventures! The meal is paid separately on the night.

Even though meals aren’t included in your booking, we make sure the group stays together and has some brilliant meals organised, all you need to do is turn up and enjoy.

Drinks & Water

Tap water is safe to drink, and you can refill your bottles at the accommodation before heading out each day. You’ll also drive past some shops with opportunities to grab snacks or beverages on the way to/from the hike.

Accommodation

Over the weekend, you’ll stay in shared accommodation in a welcoming local bunkhouse or guesthouse in the Brecon Beacons area. Rooms are typically twin-share or small dormitories. It’s basic but comfortable, offering everything you need for a good night’s sleep after a full day on the mountains.

Facilities typically include:
  • Comfortable beds
