Difficulty Gauge

Difficulty:

Challenging

How challenging is the trek?

The Toubkal Weekender is short, sharp, and straight to the summit. You’ll be attempting to climb North Africa’s highest peak, Mount Toubkal at 4,167m, in just a few days, which makes this a fast-paced, high-altitude challenge.

You won’t need mountaineering experience, but you will need a decent level of fitness. The rapid ascent, big elevation gain, and long summit day and return hike to Imlil means this isn’t just a “dip-your-toes-in” kind of trek. It’s a punchy little adventure that squeezes a lot into a tight timeframe and it’s ideal if you’re short on time but still want a proper mountain fix.

Here’s how to know if you’re ready:

Pre-Trek Fitness Prep

Because the itinerary moves quickly, your legs and lungs need to be ready to work. You should be able to:

  • Trek for 6 to 8 hours per day with a 6 to 8kg backpack

  • Handle 1,000m+ of elevation gain, especially on summit day

  • Train on hills, stairs, or mountains, and ideally build in back-to-back hiking days

  • Be comfortable walking on rough, rocky terrain for multiple hours

With a few months of consistent training, most active hikers can take this trek on. Just remember, the altitude comes quick, so the fitter you are, the better your body will adapt.

What to expect on the trek

Altitude Challenges

Mount Toubkal’s summit sits at 4,167m, which is high enough to feel the effects of altitude. You won’t be up there long, but the lack of oxygen can make the summit push feel significantly harder. The itinerary includes a night at the Toubkal Refuge (around 3,200m) to help you acclimatise before the big day, but it’s still a quick gain, so going slowly and staying hydrated is key.

Duration

The Toubkal Weekender typically runs over 4 days. You’ll spend:

  • Day 1 arrival in Marrakesh and transfer to Imlil

  • Start trekking on Day 2 and spend the night at the refuge

  • An early morning summit on day three of your trip, followed by a descent back to Imlil and a transfer to Marrakech

The summit day is long, often 9 to 10 hours of trekking with a steep climb and descent.

Terrain

You’ll be trekking on:

  • Rocky mountain paths and scree-covered slopes

  • Mule trails, switchbacks, and occasional loose terrain

  • No technical climbing, but good balance and strong legs help, especially coming down

In colder months or early spring, snow and ice are possible above the refuge, in which case crampons and an ice axe may be used. Your guides will kit you out and train you on the spot if needed, no prior technical experience required.

Weather

Weather varies by season:

  • Spring and autumn offer crisp, clear trekking conditions

  • Winter may bring snow and ice, making the summit feel a bit more “expedition-y”

  • Summer can be warm lower down, but the summit can still be windy and cold

Expect chilly mornings and evenings, especially at the refuge, and dress in layers for the early summit push.

The Toubkal Weekender is the perfect trip if you’re looking to:

  • Climb a proper 4,000m+ peak

  • Test your fitness at altitude

  • Fit a serious adventure into a long weekend

  • Train for bigger expeditions in the future

It’s challenging but achievable, fast but well-guided, and gives you serious bragging rights back home...all in just a few days.

FAQs

The Mt Toubkal, Roof of the North Weekender with EverTrek costs between £645 and £695, depending on your chosen departure year. This includes a 4-day trip (with a 2-day trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal), all accommodation, meals during the trek, internal transfers, the services of experienced local guides, and full support from our team. International flights to Marrakech, travel insurance, tips, and some meals in Marrakech are not included.

EverTrek uses the classic route from Imlil through the High Atlas Mountains, staying overnight at the Toubkal Refuge before the summit push. This well-established route offers incredible views across North Africa and a challenging but achievable ascent. The trek takes you through traditional Berber villages and allows time to explore the incredible culture and rugged landscapes of Morocco.

This trek is rated challenging. You’ll need a good level of fitness to trek 5 to 7 hours per day, including steep ascents and rocky, high-altitude trails. The summit day involves ascending to 4,167m, so strong legs, a steady pace, and mental determination are key. Prior trekking experience is helpful but not essential for success.

Training should focus on:

  • Cardiovascular fitness (walking, hill training, cycling, swimming)
  • Leg and core strength (strength exercises and loaded pack walks)
  • Endurance with back-to-back long hikes

We recommend training 3–5 times a week for at least 2 months before the trek.
Joining an EverTrek UK training weekend (such as in Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons) is also a fantastic way to prepare physically and mentally.

You won’t need much money during the trek itself, as all meals, accommodation, and guiding services are included. However, you should bring some cash for tips, snacks, drinks in Marrakech, and souvenirs. Moroccan Dirham in small denominations is recommended, and cash is best for remote areas.

There are no showers during the trek, including at the Toubkal Refuge. However, toilets are available both at the refuge and along the trekking route. We recommend bringing wet wipes, biodegradable soap, and a flannel to stay fresh during the trek.

The best trekking seasons are:

  • April to October – Milder weather, clearer skies, and stable conditions for summiting.
  • November to March – Winter conditions, with snow on the summit. Technical equipment (like crampons) may be needed if you trek during these months (available to rent), making it a more challenging winter mountaineering experience.

Tipping is customary in Morocco and greatly appreciated by your trekking team. We recommend budgeting around 10% of your total trip cost. For a trip priced between £645 and £695, a tip of approximately £65–£70 would be appropriate, this is usually pooled together by the group and allocated to the guides, chef and support crew.

Although Mount Toubkal is lower than major Himalayan peaks, altitude sickness can still be a risk above 3,000m. To minimise your chances:

  • Follow the gradual ascent itinerary
  • Drink 3–4 litres of water per day
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking during the trek
  • Recognise early symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness
  • Consider taking Diamox if recommended by your GP
  • Communicate openly with your guide about how you’re feeling — early intervention is key

Yes, your main duffel bag must not exceed 15kg, respecting porter welfare standards.
You will also carry a daypack with essentials like water, snacks, layers, and sun protection.
Pack light and smart, anything extra you don’t need on the mountain can be left securely at your accommodation in Imlil.
