The Tomacaya Route is an awesome off-the-beaten-path trek that takes you deep into the remote valleys of the Andes, far from the crowds of the classic Inca Trail. Difficulty Gauge

Difficulty:

Moderate

How challenging is the trek?

The Tomacaya Route to Machu Picchu is a lesser-known alternative to the classic Inca Trail but don’t let that “alternative” label fool you. This route is longer, higher, and more remote, making it a bigger challenge physically and mentally, but also far more rewarding.

You'll cross high Andean passes over 4,500m, descend into lush cloud forests, and trek through remote areas that see very few other hikers. There’s no need for technical climbing skills, but you’ll want a decent level of fitness to enjoy the full experience.

If you're after a wild, immersive journey to Machu Picchu, rather than a crowded procession on stone steps, this is the one.

Pre-Trek Fitness Prep

Before taking on Tomacaya, you should aim to:

  • Trek for 6 to 8 hours per day carrying a 6 to 10kg pack

  • Handle 800 to 1,000m of ascent and descent, sometimes in a single day

  • Train for consecutive day hikes on varied terrain

  • Build up leg strength, endurance, and cardio fitness through hiking, hill work, or stair training

If you’re new to multi-day trekking, don’t panic with a few months of focused training, this route is well within reach. You don’t need to be an athlete, just consistent with your prep.

What to expect on the trek

Altitude Challenges

You’ll be trekking above 4,000m for several days, with some passes reaching around 4,900m. While this is lower than Himalayan expeditions, it’s still high enough to affect performance and energy levels. The itinerary includes time to acclimatise before the highest points, and your guides will be keeping a close eye on your health as you ascend.

Duration

The trek typically takes 6 to 7 days, depending on side hikes, weather, and the exact pace of the group. Most days involve 6 to 8 hours of trekking, though some days may be longer depending on trail conditions.

You’ll finish the journey with a dramatic arrival at Machu Picchu, either via the Sun Gate or train access, depending on the final segment of the route.

Terrain

The terrain on the Tomacaya Route is varied and rugged:

  • Steep ascents and descents, often on dirt, scree, or rocky trails

  • Remote high-altitude passes, glacial valleys, and cloud forest paths

  • Well away from the touristy infrastructure of the Inca Trail – this is raw Andean wilderness

There are no ropes or climbing involved, but it’s a physically demanding trek, especially with the altitude and uneven terrain.

Weather

Peru’s Andes can throw all sorts of weather at you. The dry season (May to October) is the best time to go, with clearer skies and cooler temps. Expect cold nights at high altitude, possibly below freezing and warm days in the valleys. Rain is possible at any time, especially in the cloud forest zones.

You’ll need to be prepared for everything from hot sun to chilly winds and potential rain - layering is key, along with a good waterproof.

The Tomacaya Route to Machu Picchu is for trekkers looking for a wilder, quieter way to reach one of the world’s most iconic sites. It’s tougher than the classic Inca Trail - higher, longer, and more remote, but it’s also more peaceful, more authentic, and more rewarding.

Perfect if you want a real trekking experience, not just a photo at the end.

11-Day Machu Picchu via Tomacaya route - The Hidden Valley Itinerary

One of our team members will be waiting to whisk you away from Cusco Airport straight to your hotel, where you'll meet the rest of your trekking group throughout the day. They'll be just as excited as you are to start this incredible journey!

Keep in mind that Cusco sits at high altitude, so it’s normal to start feeling the effects as you settle in. Take it easy, drink plenty of water, and give your body time to adjust.

If time allows, you might want to explore a bit of the city. Head to the vibrant San Pedro Market for a taste of local culture and some great photo ops. Or take a stroll to San Blas, the city’s historic and artistic neighbourhood. With its charming cobbled streets, colonial architecture built on Incan foundations, and landmarks like the 12-Angle Stone, Plaza de Armas, and Qorikancha (the legendary Sun Temple), there's plenty to discover.

Don’t worry if your flight arrives later, tomorrow includes a guided city tour to make sure you see the best of Cusco!

In the evening, you'll meet your guide for a full trek briefing, followed by a welcome dinner with your group. Let the adventure begin!

Accommodation: Hotel in Cusco (Tikka Wasi or similar)

Meals included: Dinner

Time to Discover magical Cusco!

Today you’ll dive into the rich history of this enchanting city, shaped by both Incan roots and colonial influence. Your half-day tour begins in Cusco’s main square, once known as Huacaypata (Warriors’ Square) during Incan times.

As your guide brings the past to life, you’ll take in the impressive Cusco Cathedral, built between 1560 and 1664 using striking red granite stones taken from the ancient Inca Fortress of Sacsayhuamán. It’s the perfect introduction to the city’s fascinating blend of cultures and stories.

The Cusco Cathedral is undoubtedly one of the city’s most awe-inspiring landmarks, not just for its striking façade, but for the treasures it holds inside. It houses one of the most important collections of colonial-era gold and silver artwork, offering a glimpse into the city's opulent past.

From there, you’ll head to the Koricancha - once the most revered temple in the Inca Empire, now partially overlaid by the Convent of Santo Domingo. This sacred site was once covered in gold to honour the Sun God, and its ancient stones still reflect the glory of the Inca Empire. As you stroll through the historic streets it truly feels like stepping back in time.

After soaking up the energy of Cusco, it’s time to explore the incredible Incan ruins just beyond the city.

You’ll visit the mighty Sacsayhuaman Fortress, famous for its colossal stone walls. These “Living Stones” were crafted so precisely, without any mortar, that not even a sheet of paper can slide between them. It’s one of the great mysteries of the Incan world.

You will also explore the reddish ruins of Puca Pucara, the ceremonial site of Qenko, and Tambomachay - also known as the Inca baths.

This is your chance to dive deeper into the rich culture and history of the Incas while exploring the true heart of Cusco. Trust us - you’ll be buzzing with stories by the end of the day, and you’ll need to tear yourself away from chatting just to make it to bed!

Accommodation: Hotel in Cusco (Tikka Wasi or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Today’s a real highlight as we kick off our first trek of the adventure, straight into the Andes to explore the hidden gem of Huchuy Qosqo, meaning “Little Cusco” in the Quechua language.

We'll trek from 3,750m up to 4,400m, before heading back down to Cusco in the evening. This route follows the trusted “hike high, sleep low” acclimatisation strategy we use at EverTrek, it’s a game-changer for helping your body adjust to altitude.

This breathtaking trek is only accessible on foot and takes you through a remote corner of the Sacred Valley, surrounded by jaw-dropping views of the snow-capped Cordillera Urubamba mountains. You’ll hike for 6–7 hours, crossing mountain passes, shimmering lakes, quiet local villages, and open plains. All far off the beaten path.

Once we reach the highest point at 4,400m, the descent is absolutely epic. You’ll follow a restored section of ancient Inca trail through a dramatic canyon, crossing streams via rustic bridges before arriving at a rarely visited Incan site tucked into the hillside.

We’ll take a breather under the shade of Queñua trees (Andean oak), grab some lunch, then continue down a zigzagging path for about 2 more hours to Lamay (2,900m), where our ride back to Cusco awaits.

All in all this is an unforgettable day in the Andes and the perfect way to acclimatise for the journey ahead!

The Journey Starts here!

Today marks the official start of your epic trek into the Peruvian Andes! We set off early from Cusco, travelling west toward Limatambo. Along the way, we’ll pass the Tika Tika Pass, where you’ll catch your first awe-inspiring glimpse of the mighty Mt. Salkantay and Mt. Humantay rising in the distance. The drive takes us across the Anta Plateau, a vibrant agricultural region dotted with traditional farms, rolling green hills, and framed by rugged, snow-capped peaks.

Our first stop is at the Incan ceremonial site of Tarawasi, where we’ll explore the ruins and learn about its significance in Inca culture before continuing on to the remote village of Tomacaya. From here, the real adventure begins.

The trail starts in a warm, fertile valley where locals grow fruits and vegetables. As we gain altitude, the scenery transforms. Valleys give way to open plateaus and mountain meadows, the air grows crisper, and the views become more dramatic with every step.

After 6–7 hours of trekking through varied landscapes, we arrive at our campsite in Tinko (4,154m / 13,628ft) - a peaceful spot next to a stream and tucked beneath the valley walls. It’s the perfect place to relax, soak in the fresh mountain air, and rest up for the days ahead.

• Driving distance: 77.2 km (48 mi)

• Trekking distance: 11.1 km (6.9 mi) – Time: 6-7 hours

Accomodation: Tents

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Conquer the High Pass!

Today’s trek kicks off with a steady climb as we head up the valley, taking the left-hand trail toward the high mountain pass. It’s a challenging but rewarding ascent, surrounded by pristine alpine landscapes and endless sky.

As the sun rises and the day begins to warm, take your time and soak in the scenery, you’re in Andean condor territory now, so keep your eyes peeled for these majestic birds gliding above the peaks.

After around 3–4 hours of trekking, you’ll reach one of the most spectacular points of the route: the Tocto Pass at 4,900m (16,072 ft). From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping, crowd-free views of the towering south face of Mt. Salkantay; a true reward for your efforts and one of the highlights of the journey.

From the pass, we begin a gradual descent through the Pampacahua Valley, tracing ancient trails with the ever-impressive eastern face of Mt. Salkantay in full view.

We end the day at our scenic campsite in Canal De inca, nestled beneath the towering mountains and surrounded by dramatic Andean beauty. This is one of those evenings you'll never forget.

• Trekking distance: 15 km (9.3 mi) – Time: 8-9 hours

Accomodation: Tents

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We leave the towering Mt. Salkantay behind as we descend along an ancient Incan canal that winds through the heart of the Pampacahuana Valley.

This peaceful route passes small farming settlements scattered across the landscape. As we reach the valley’s end and drop below the tree line, the vegetation becomes richer and more diverse.

After a brief visit to explore Paucarcanchas - a remote Inca site located where the Pampacahuana and Q’esca valleys meet, we continue downhill to join the first section of the famous Inca Trail, leading us toward Chamana. This small settlement lies just outside the Llactapata ruins.

Afterwards, we’ll continue our descent toward Meskey, a peaceful settlement near the Llactapata ruins, once an important rest stop for Inca travellers en route to Machu Picchu. Tonight, it becomes our own exclusive sanctuary. We're proud to be the only company that uses this beautiful campsite, and we've added a little luxury: a hot shower, ready to help you unwind and recharge after the past few days of adventure.

• Trekking distance: 16.8 km (10.4 mi) – Time: 7-8 hours

Accomodation: Tents

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We are on the edge of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary.

We’ll explore the ruins of Huayna Q’ente, renowned for its stunning Inca terraces and breathtaking surroundings. Afterward, we’ll exit the National Sanctuary through the town of Qoriwairachina and make our way to Piscacucho, the main gateway to the Inca Trail.

From there, the trail follows the Vilcanota River, passing several more ancient archaeological sites along the way. This is the very route Hiram Bingham took in 1911 when local guides first led him to the hidden city of Machu Picchu.

• Driving distance: 15.6 km (9.7 mi) – Time: 30 min

Accommodation: Hotel in Ollantaytambo

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

While you’ll explore Machu Picchu tomorrow, today gives you the chance to reach it on foot.

We’ll rise early and catch the train from Ollantaytambo to the Urubamba River, arriving at a special spot known as ‘Km. 104’ - the starting point of today’s trek.

Starting at 2,128 meters, the trail leads us up a series of zig-zag switchbacks that ease the climb. By now, your legs may be feeling the burn, but hey, that’s part of the challenge!

We’ll follow the final stretch of the Classic Inca Trail, passing several archaeological sites along the way to the famed citadel.

A major highlight today is reaching the iconic Sun Gate (2,730 m), where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains and valleys. There’s truly something magical about arriving at Machu Picchu on foot.

After capturing photos at the Sun Gate, we’ll descend the trail to Aguas Calientes, passing the Machu Picchu entrance, teasing us in anticipation of tomorrow’s exploration.

Aguas Calientes is a lively town, bustling with market stalls perfect for quirky souvenirs and plenty of great dining options.

How excited are you to see this incredible place?

Accommodation: Hotel in Aguas Calientes

Please Note: We always do our best to follow the itinerary. However, it can change occasionally due to temporary park restrictions with permits, campsite availability, weather, road closures, guest ability/injury, and natural events like fires and flooding.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Exploring the incredible Machu Picchu - an experience like no other!

After arriving on foot yesterday, today is all about diving deeper into this iconic site. We’ll leave our hotel and take the bus up the winding road to the Machu Picchu citadel at 2400m. Your guide will share fascinating insights about Incan life, culture, and customs as we explore the ruins.

You’ll have plenty of time, usually around three hours, to wander, discover hidden corners, and soak in the magic of Machu Picchu at your own pace.

Afterwards, you can unwind in the soothing hot springs of Aguas Calientes before catching the train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, it’s a short walk to your hotel where you’ll spend the night. What a day. Machu Picchu: check. But don’t be surprised if this place lingers in your thoughts long after - it leaves a mark that only a few places can.

But the adventure isn’t over yet!

Accommodation: Hotel in Ollantaytambo

FAQs

The Machu Picchu via Tomacaya Route Trek with EverTrek costs between £1,950 and £2,100, depending on your chosen departure date. This includes an incredible 11-day adventure through remote Peru, all accommodation and camping equipment during the trek, meals while trekking, all permits (including Machu Picchu entry), guided tours and full support from our expert local guides and crew. International flights, travel insurance, tips, and some meals in Cusco are not included.

EverTrek uses the Tomacaya Route, often called The Hidden Valley Route. This path is more remote and less crowded than the traditional trails, allowing you to experience the Andes far from the busy trekking routes. It also brings tourism and jobs to remote villages that are rarely visited by tourists, directly helping to support local communities while offering a unique and authentic view of Peru’s beautiful mountain landscapes.

This trek is classed as challenging. You’ll need a good level of fitness to hike 5–8 hours per day, sometimes at high altitudes up to around 4,900m. Prior trekking experience is helpful but not essential. Good stamina, a positive attitude, and a steady hiking pace will make the journey much more enjoyable.

Training should focus on:

  • Cardiovascular fitness (running, hiking, cycling, swimming)
  • Leg and core strength (strength training, weighted hiking)
  • Building endurance with long hikes carrying a pack

We recommend training 4–5 times a week for at least 2–3 months before the trek. Joining one of our UK-based training weekends (such as in Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons) is a great way to meet the team and prepare your body and mind.

You won't need much during the trek itself as all meals, camping equipment, permits, and guiding services are included. However, you might want to bring some cash for snacks, drinks in Cusco, souvenirs, or to tip the local team at the end of the trek.
Peruvian Soles in small denominations are recommended.

While at the camps there are no showers, so we recommend bringing wet wipes, biodegradable soap, and a flannel to stay clean. When staying in towns before and after the trek, hot showers and full facilities are available at your hotel accommodation. At the camps, warm water will be provided daily by the support team so you can have a morning wash.

The best trekking seasons are:

  • April to October – Dry season with stable weather, clear skies, and stunning views.

We recommend avoiding November to March, when heavy rain during Peru’s wet season can make trails muddy and river crossings more challenging.

Tipping is customary and very much appreciated by your local team. We recommend budgeting around 10% of your total trip cost. For a trip priced between £1,950 and £2,100, a tip of about £195–£210 is appropriate, to be shared fairly among your guides, horsemen, and cooks. Your guide will help coordinate the tipping process.

As you'll be trekking at high elevations (up to 4,900m), altitude sickness is a risk. To minimise it:

  • Follow the gradual ascent itinerary
  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking 3–4 litres of water daily
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking before and during the trek
  • Be aware of early signs: headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite
  • Consider taking Diamox if recommended by your GP
  • Let your guide know immediately if you feel unwell, early action is crucial

Yes, your main duffel bag should not exceed 7kg (this weight includes your sleeping bag). You will also carry your own daypack with essentials like water, snacks, rain gear, and warm layers. Pack light and smart, any extra luggage can be safely stored at your hotel in Cusco while you’re trekking.
