Difficulty:

Moderate

How challenging is the trek?

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a great introduction to high-altitude trekking in Nepal. It doesn’t go as high as Everest or Mera, but don’t be fooled, this is still a proper mountain adventure. You’ll be climbing to 4,130m, surrounded by towering peaks on all sides, and spending several days trekking up and down steep Himalayan terrain.

It’s very achievable for most people with a moderate level of fitness, and with the right prep, it’s often seen as a perfect first trek in Nepal.

Here’s how to check if you’re ready:

Pre-Trek Fitness Prep

Before heading off, you should be able to:

  • Walk for 4 to 6 hours per day with a 5 to 8kg backpack

  • Tackle elevation gains of 500 to 900m, including plenty of steps and uneven terrain

  • Manage consecutive day hiking without needing full recovery days between

If Annapurna Base Camp is your first high-altitude adventure, you’re in the right place. With a few months of structured training, walking, hill work, or stair sessions, this trek is well within reach for most active hikers.

What to expect on the trek

Altitude Challenges

ABC tops out at 4,130m, which isn’t extreme by Himalayan standards, but still high enough to feel the effects of altitude. You won’t need oxygen or mountaineering skills, but proper acclimatisation is still key. The itinerary is designed to help you ascend gradually and safely, with rest stops at key points like Deurali or Machapuchare Base Camp before the final push to ABC.

Duration

The trek takes 15 days. You’ll average around 5 to 7 hours of walking per day, with plenty of time to stop for tea breaks and enjoy the scenery.

The trail starts at relatively low altitude, so the first few days are warm and forested, with cooler, more alpine conditions as you gain height.

Terrain

The route is well-established and passes through a mix of local villages, farmland, forests, and high altitude glacial terrain. Expect:

  • Long ascents and descents with lots of stone staircases

  • Occasional steep sections, but nothing technical

  • A few narrow trails and river crossings, but all safe and well-travelled

It’s a physical challenge, especially on the legs, but no ropes, crampons, or climbing gear are required.

Weather

Conditions vary by season. Spring (Mar–May) and Autumn (Sep–Nov) are the most popular times, with clear skies and comfortable trekking temperatures. Mornings and evenings at ABC can be chilly, sometimes below freezing, but daytime trekking conditions are usually very pleasant.

Rain is more likely in monsoon (June–August), and snow can fall in winter, but the trail remains open most of the year.

In the evening, we’ll head out together for a welcome group dinner at one of Kathmandu’s most popular traditional restaurants. Tuck into delicious Nepali cuisine while enjoying live cultural music and a vibrant ethnic dance performance, the perfect start to your Himalayan experience.

Today, you’ll head out to explore the rich cultural and historical treasures of the Kathmandu Valley, a truly unforgettable introduction to Nepal’s vibrant heritage.

You’ll visit some of the city’s most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites, where ancient temples, bustling squares, and sacred shrines offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past. Along the way, we’ll stop for lunch at one of our favourite viewpoints, where you can relax and take in stunning panoramic views of the valley below. There will also be time to explore the trekking hub of Thamel, perfect for picking up any last-minute kit or essentials before the journey begins. After a full and inspiring day, we recommend an early night, tomorrow, the real adventure begins!

This morning, we set off for the beautiful city of Pokhara, nestled in the heart of the Annapurna region.

Known for its breathtaking mountain views and serene lakeside charm, Pokhara is the perfect gateway to your trekking adventure. Our journey follows the scenic Prithvi Highway, winding westward alongside the glistening Trishuli River. It’s a road trip like no other, with dramatic hills, rural villages, and glimpses of Himalayan peaks along the way. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you’ll have time to relax, unwind, and refresh after the drive. Later in the evening, you’re free to explore the vibrant lakeside area, stroll along the shore of Phewa Lake, browse the local shops, or simply soak up the peaceful atmosphere of this enchanting town.

Today marks the exciting start of your Himalayan trek! Our destination is the charming village of Tikhedhunga.

We begin the day with a scenic two-hour drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, the gateway to the Annapurna region. Once we arrive, your luggage will be handed over to the porters and, after a short trek briefing and some final preparations, we’ll set off on foot. Our trail begins by following the southern bank of the Modi Khola (River) towards Birethanti.

Here, we complete the necessary permit checks at the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) office before continuing along the route beside the Bhurungdi Khola. Along the way, we pass through peaceful villages like Lamdawali, Sudame, and Hile, and walk alongside cascading waterfalls, a perfect introduction to the natural beauty of the region. After a few hours of trekking, we reach Tikhedhunga, where we’ll settle into a cosy mountain lodge for the night.

Today’s trek takes us deeper into the Annapurna region as we journey to the mountain village of Ghorepani.

We begin with a challenging but rewarding climb, over 3,000 stone steps leading us up to the village of Ulleri. Take your time and enjoy the views, as the path winds through traditional Gurung settlements and terraced hillsides. From Ulleri, the trail becomes more gentle, weaving its way through enchanting forests of rhododendron and oak. As we ascend, we pass through the peaceful hamlets of Banthanti and Nangge Thanti, surrounded by lush greenery and, if the season is right, vibrant blooms of rhododendron, Nepal’s national flower.

By late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Ghorepani, a picturesque village perched high in the mountains. This is the gateway to the famed Poon Hill viewpoint, one of the best spots to witness sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Today begins with an early start, and for good reason!

We set off before dawn for a short but rewarding hike up to the famous Poon Hill viewpoint (3,193m). As the first rays of sunlight hit the snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, the mountains come alive with colour an unforgettable Himalayan sunrise you’ll treasure forever. After soaking in the panoramic views and capturing plenty of photos, we return to Ghorepani for breakfast before continuing our trek.
From here, the trail leads east, gradually climbing through lush rhododendron forests towards Deurali Pass. We pass by Ban Thanti and Thulo Odar Kharka, walking through serene woodlands alive with birdsong and mountain air.

A steep descent followed by a final short climb brings us to the peaceful village of Tadapani, nestled among the trees with stunning views of Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain) and the surrounding peaks. This is where we’ll rest for the night in a welcoming mountain lodge.

Today’s journey takes us from the tranquil forests of Tadapani to the hillside village of Sinuwa, passing through some of the most picturesque landscapes of the trek.

We begin with a steep descent through enchanting rhododendron forest, making our way towards a suspension bridge that crosses the Kimrong River. Along the way, we’re treated to views of terraced fields carved into the hillsides and the soothing sound of cascading waterfalls. After crossing the river, we begin a steady series of ups and downs, eventually arriving at Taulung.

From here, we make our way to Chhomrong, a traditional Gurung village perched on the slopes of the mighty Annapurna massif. With its stunning mountain backdrop and peaceful atmosphere, Chhomrong is a highlight of the trek. Leaving the village behind, we descend once again via stone steps, cross a bridge over the Chhomrong River, and finish the day with a climb up to Sinuwa. Here, we’ll settle into a cosy lodge for the night, surrounded by forest and mountains, the perfect place to rest before continuing deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary.

Today, we continue our journey higher into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, with Deurali as our destination.

We begin with a gentle walk from Sinuwa, passing through the serene forest trail towards Kuldhigar and then on to the small settlement of Bamboo. From here, the path begins to climb steeply via a long stone staircase, leading us to Dobhan after crossing a suspension bridge. The trail winds through dense forests of bamboo, rhododendron, and oak, creating a peaceful and shaded atmosphere as we gain altitude. As we ascend further, the trees begin to thin and the landscape becomes more rugged and dramatic.

We continue climbing through the valley, passing the remote Himalayan outpost of Himalaya and the mysterious Hinku Cave, a shelter once used by early mountaineers. Eventually, we arrive at Deurali, surrounded by towering cliffs and alpine wilderness. Tonight, we rest at a lodge in Deurali, preparing for tomorrow’s ascent into the high alpine zone of the Annapurna Base Camp trail.

Today is the day you’ve been waiting for, the journey to the legendary Annapurna Base Camp begins!

We start with a gentle ascent following the trail alongside the Modi Khola, surrounded by towering cliffs and high-altitude wilderness. Our first stop is the small settlement of Bagar, where the trail begins to climb more steeply. From here, a challenging yet exhilarating hike leads us to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700m) a stunning viewpoint nestled beneath the sacred and iconic Fishtail Mountain. We'll take time to rest, soak in the views, and capture photos of the surrounding giants, peaks rising above 7,000 and even 8,000 metres into the sky.

After recharging, we continue along a wide, open trail into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary. Surrounded by a dramatic amphitheatre of Himalayan giants, we make the final push to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) the crowning jewel of this trek. Here, you're rewarded with a truly breathtaking 360-degree panorama of snow-covered peaks, including Annapurna I, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Machhapuchhre. It’s a moment of awe, achievement, and pure mountain magic.

After an unforgettable day reaching Annapurna Base Camp, we begin our journey back down the trail leaving behind the towering peaks of the Annapurna Sanctuary.

We retrace our steps, descending through the wide open valley past Machhapuchhre Base Camp, then continuing down to Bagar and Deurali. Along the way, we pass familiar landmarks cascading waterfalls, serene temples, and the legendary Hinku Cave, now viewed from a new perspective. The trail continues through the lush forests of rhododendron, oak, and bamboo as we make our way past Dobhan and eventually reach Bamboo, a quiet forested haven where we’ll rest for the night in a welcoming lodge.

Today’s trek offers a rewarding blend of scenic walking and well-earned relaxation.

We begin by ascending to Kuldighar, before making our way back down through Sinuwa and onward to the familiar village of Chhomrong, nestled beneath the towering peaks. From here, we take on a steep downhill trail that leads us to our destination Jhinu Danda. Tonight, we rest in Jhinu Danda, refreshed and revitalised for the final stretch of our trek.

Today’s trek is filled with charm, natural beauty, and your final sweeping views of the mighty Annapurna range.

From Landruk, we begin our day walking past traditional whitewashed stone houses and a peaceful local temple, descending a stone staircase through the quiet hillside towards Bhaisekharka. From the base of the hill, we take on a steady vertical climb through lush forest, ascending to the ridge at Pitam Deurali. This spot offers a breathtaking final glimpse of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli, a perfect farewell from the Himalayas.

The trail then winds gently downhill along a beautifully paved stone path, leading us to the peaceful village of Pothana, perched on a forested ridge with views stretching across the valley.
Tonight, we settle into a lodge in Pothana, our final night in the mountains, filled with reflection and quiet celebration.

Today marks the final leg of your trekking journey, as we make our way back to civilisation and the lakeside city of Pokhara.

We begin with a relaxed walk from Pothana to the charming village of Dhampus, offering one last look at terraced hills, traditional homes, and distant peaks. From Dhampus, the trail descends gently through forested paths, passing a peaceful little lake before reaching Phedi.

At Phedi, our vehicle will be waiting to drive us back to Pokhara, where your trekking boots can finally take a well-earned rest. This evening, you’re free to relax and celebrate however you choose, whether that’s enjoying dinner with your trekking crew, exploring the lively lakeside streets, or simply unwinding in the comfort of your hotel. Tonight, you’ll stay in a well-appointed 3-star hotel in Pokhara, a perfect place to reflect on the incredible journey you’ve completed.

Today, we say goodbye to the mountains and catch our transfer from Pokhara back to Kathmandu. Sit back, relax, and take in the changing scenery as we journey from the peaceful hillsides back to the bustling heart of Nepal’s capital.

Once we arrive, you’ll be escorted to your hotel where you can freshen up, unwind, and enjoy a bit of well-deserved comfort and luxury at the stylish Hotel Aloft. In the evening, it's time to celebrate! Head out with your team to toast the journey you’ve shared, the miles walked, the peaks conquered, and the friendships forged along the way.

What’s Included:
  • All meals during the trek (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • Breakfasts in Kathmandu and Pokhara
  • Group welcome and farewell dinners in Kathmandu
Typical Meals
Breakfast:
  • Porridge, pancakes, Tibetan bread, chapatis
  • Toast with jam/honey
  • Tea, coffee, hot lemon drinks
Lunch:
  • Dal Bhat (the Everest of Nepali food! Endless refills of rice, lentils, veg)
  • Sherpa stew, fried noodles, momos (dumplings), fried potatoes
  • Fresh veggie soups and pastas
Dinner:
  • Soups, noodle dishes, pizzas, curries
  • More dal bhat (you’ll be a connoisseur by the end)

At Annapurna Base Camp itself, meals are simple but delicious. There’s something pretty special about eating hot soup with the mighty peaks of Annapurna and Machapuchare towering over you

Snacks:

We recommend bringing your own energy snacks for extra boosts on long trekking days: think protein bars, trail mix, or energy gels. Buying snacks on the trail is possible, but they get pricier the higher you go.

Water:
  • Boiled or purified drinking water is available at teahouses (small charge)
  • Bring a reusable bottle or hydration bladder and purification tablets or a filter bottle for extra peace of mind
Dietary Requirements:

Vegetarian? Vegan? Gluten-free? No worries - let us know in advance and we’ll help make sure your meals suit your needs. Vegetarian food is widely available on the trek, and simple diets are easier to cater for, especially at altitude.

FAQs

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek with EverTrek typically costs between £2,250 and £2,350, depending on the season and group size. This includes all accommodation, meals during the trek, permits (including the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit and TIMS card), internal transport within Nepal, and full support from our experienced local guides and porters.

The Annapurna Base Camp trek is a challenging but achievable adventure, reaching an altitude of 4,130m. You’ll be trekking for 5–7 hours per day across a mix of terrain, with some steep ascents and descents.

While this trek is shorter than the Annapurna Circuit, 15 days total including travel, it still involves multiple consecutive days of hiking and a steady climb into the high Himalayas. A good level of general fitness, stamina, and mental resilience will go a long way in making the experience more enjoyable.

We recommend a balanced training plan that includes cardio fitness, leg strength, and hiking endurance. Activities like walking, running, hill climbing, stair workouts, or cycling are great, especially when combined with long walks carrying a backpack.

Try to train 3–4 times a week, and gradually build up to walking 6–7 hours over back-to-back days. This will help your body adjust to the physical demands of the trek.
Our UK training weekends (e.g. in Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons) are a great way to prepare, meet the team, and get comfortable with your kit.

While most expenses are included, we recommend budgeting around £20–£45 per day for extras like snacks, hot drinks, Wi-Fi, hot showers, charging devices, and tips. Make sure to carry some Nepalese Rupees, especially for use in remote villages where card payments aren’t accepted.

Yes, hot showers are available in most teahouses along the route, particularly in the lower villages. As you climb higher, facilities become more basic, and hot water may be limited or come at a small cost. Many trekkers use wet wipes or flannels at higher elevations when water is scarce or it's simply too cold for a shower.

The best seasons for the ABC trek are:

  • Spring (March to May): Enjoy pleasant temperatures, rhododendron forests in bloom, and great mountain views.

  • Autumn (September to November): Clear skies, stable weather, and some of the most stunning views of Annapurna South, Machapuchare, and Hiunchuli.

Avoid the monsoon season (June to August) due to rain, slippery trails, and potential landslides.

Tipping is a meaningful way to show appreciation for your local team. We suggest budgeting around 10% of your total trip cost. For a £2,250–£2,350 trek, that would be approximately £225–£235 in total. Your guide will advise on how to fairly distribute tips among the team at the end of the trek.

Although Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) is lower than some other Himalayan routes, altitude sickness can still be a risk. To minimise your chances:

  • Follow the acclimatised itinerary, which includes gradual elevation gain.

  • Drink 3–4 litres of water per day to stay hydrated.

  • Avoid alcohol and smoking.

  • Be aware of early symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness, and loss of appetite.

  • Speak to your GP about Diamox (acetazolamide) as a preventative option.

  • Let your guide know how you’re feeling, early intervention is key.
